How to Build a Thought Leadership Program for Employees — And Gain a Media Advantage

Your company’s subject-matter experts can play a crucial role in shaping brand reputation, business growth, and overall visibility. Yet many organizations still lack a structured, long-term approach to making their experts visible — both internally and externally.

Here’s my advice: Create a program. Call it a thought leadership program or use another name that signals how seriously your organization invests in helping employees develop their communication skills. Focus on their credibility, expertise, and ability to shape discourse within their field — and help them help themselves.

A Simple Framework for Thought Leadership Programs

Here’s a basic outline for how to structure an internal thought leadership initiative:

1. Select a small group of key experts.

Choose knowledge professionals in strategically important roles. Participation should feel valuable — even a little exclusive.

2. Invite them with a long-term perspective.

Position the program as a way to develop communication skills they can use throughout their careers, not just for the company’s benefit today.

3. Foster a sense of shared purpose.

Encourage group identity. Participants should feel like they’re in this together — but a little friendly competition doesn’t hurt either.

4. Provide training across communication formats.

From media interviews and op-eds to LinkedIn posts, podcasts, and public speaking — give them tools to show up with clarity, confidence, and credibility.

5. Offer ongoing support.

Maintain regular contact with your thought leaders. Help them stay relevant, find timely topics, and brainstorm what to post or write about. A little guidance goes a long way.

6. Track progress, share wins, and level up.

Gather the group, celebrate successes, and provide tailored guidance to help each individual advance to the next level of visibility and influence.

A Few Final Tips…

  • Be clear about the program’s goals from the start.
  • Secure leadership support and buy-in.
  • Leverage your organization’s own platforms to amplify your thought leaders.
  • And most importantly? Bring in external experts to help you do it right 😉
