Use the CEO’s LinkedIn Profile in Media Management

More and more journalists are active on LinkedIn, and it’s often where they come across stories and keep tabs on what companies are doing. That’s why executive communication on LinkedIn should always factor in media management – in both calm and stormy times.

Most CEOs don’t use their LinkedIn posts to communicate directly with the press – that’s what corporate communications is for. Press teams pitch stories, write press releases, and handle both good news and crisis communication.

But increasingly, organizations are relying on the CEO’s own LinkedIn profile for both proactive and reactive communication when they’re under media scrutiny. A clear example came in 2023, when the major Danish pension fund, ATP, faced a damaging media story – wherafter a handful of their executives’ addressed it heads-on using their own LinkedIn profiles. Since then, we’ve seen time and time again how effective executive communication on LinkedIn can both shape positive media narratives and soften the blow during a crisis.

That’s because LinkedIn is a personal channel that speaks directly to stakeholders – without the journalist’s filter. And with up to 3,000 characters per post, there’s space to explain, clarify, and engage – without getting mobbed in the comments.

Here are six key tips for using a CEO’s LinkedIn presence in media handling:

1. Build your presence and audience before you need it

If a CEO suddenly posts during a crisis – after being inactive for months – it can come across as inauthentic. And if they only have 300 followers, the impact is limited. A strong LinkedIn presence needs to be built during peacetime, by regularly sharing stories from the company and gradually growing credibility and reach. A LinkedIn profile can’t become a weapon if it’s never been sharpened.

2. Transparency reduces backlash

The more openly a CEO communicates on LinkedIn – even about the tough stuff – the more transparency and trust they build. Sometimes, it’s even possible to prime difficult stories before they blow up in the media. This can proactively take the sting out of potential crises.

3. Be fact-based and show leadership

As with all crisis communication, sticking to facts is essential. There’s no room for emotional overreactions or vague statements. The CEO needs to demonstrate control, show a clear path forward, and provide reassurance to the wide range of stakeholders watching.

4. Use LinkedIn to get into the press

Yes, press teams pitch stories – but journalists often prefer to discover their own. A well-crafted CEO post on LinkedIn can act as a story lead, prompting journalists to follow up for interviews. These can be major industry insights or personal reflections tied to company values – but they work best when they show authentic engagement from the CEO.

5. Lead internally and externally

During a crisis, companies must communicate with many audiences – customers, members, suppliers, policymakers, and crucially, current and potential employees. LinkedIn is a unique platform where internal and external communication naturally overlap. That makes it ideal for showing strong leadership, articulating a clear crisis response, and reassuring stakeholders across the board.

6. Consider boosting the CEO’s posts

Given the wide audience a company needs to reach in a crisis, it may be worth sponsoring key CEO posts to ensure they’re seen by the right people – whether that’s customers, members, or other priority groups. You can even promote posts from a personal profile.

There’s no doubt: companies with credible, visible, and well-communicating CEOs weather crises more smoothly. A strong reputation isn’t built overnight – it’s maintained over time, across platforms, and especially on LinkedIn. Executive communication on LinkedIn is an ongoing process – that pays off.
